-- -- bwa website home about history competitions events gallery competition gallery category gallery contact see what's happening next month next month's activity see what happened last month last month's activity have a look at the current competition standings competition standings the berkshire woodturners association is based in bracknell and draws woodturners from east berkshire and south hertfordshire education at berkshire woodturners we invite professional woodturners to our club nights to show us the techniques, tools and processes they use to turn their work in the hope that some of their expertise will appeal to our members. development as well as the monthly demonstrations providing inspiration to our members, we encourage all our members of whatever turning standard to develop their turning skills through a regular monthly competition and bi-monthly turning workshops. promotion berkshire woodturners are very active in the local community delivering demonstrations at craft fairs and similar local events, we also hold free taster sessions so local non-turners can give woodturning a try without having to go to the expense of buying all of the necessary equipment. future bwa activities -- 20 june - bwa auction as usual richard maynard will be trying to persuade you to part with your hard earned cash to buy various woodturning blanks we have been fairly successful in getting a variety of different woods for this years auction. we have oak, walnut, acacia, sycamore, and lime. a few pieces of laburnum and possibly some eucalyptus and damson. we will also be selling some woodturning tools and equipment. if you have any surplus tools or equipment you no longer have a use for, bring them along and richard will try and sell them for you. the club will levy a small percentage of the selling price. 30 june and 1 july - ukwis 2018 - a woodturning family party as in 2017 the venue will be the doubletree hilton hotel in coventry, which is very easy to get to by car and has plenty of free parking.. the drive behind the event is martin saban smith. for the event this year, there is a superb line up of demonstrators, some of whom are well known to bwa: les thorne rpt; david lowe rpt; emma cook (the tiny turner); ed oliver rpt; jeff hornung (from the usa); stewart furini; martin saban-smith; "their demonstrations are creative and varied ensuring that you have plenty of inspiration throughout the weekend." there will also be a number of trade demonstrator stand to browse around. check out the event details at the event website sunday 15 july - 1st bwa summer workshop the plan is to turn a fairly basic bowl and box showing what is generally considered the prefered method. however as ever with bwa workshops, if you have something in particular you want to try out or get some help with we will see what we can do. the workshop will be held in rob legge's workshop in deepest, darkest eversley starting around 10.00 and finish around 16.00. tea and coffee and probably some cake will be provided, but bring your own lunch. the planned dates for further workshops are 16 september and 14 october. the topics for these workshops will be announced through the website and newsletter closer to the date. if you have any suggestions for topics let us know. 18 july - bwa club night our demonstrator will be stewart furini. one of the new breed of internet turners, stewart has a youtube channel through which he shows how he works to create textured and coloured bowls stewarts work is a riot of colour and often with some extreme texturing. his video channel shows not only his successful pieces but also experimental pieces and it is not unusual for stewart to remove the first attempt at a finish and do something completely different. it might be quite an interesting demo!! to see some examples of stewart's work see his website here in the last newsletter we wrongly identified stewart as the inspiration behind the maker's central show at the nec. that wasn't stewart but nick zammeti. our apologies to both for the error. the competition theme is "a turned puzzle". look out for some of david springett's work - i will put some examples in the next newsletter. previous month's activities 16 may bwa club night this was always planned to be a demonstration by a bwa club turners. however due to work commitments, jason taylor, the original designated demonstrators had to cancel and despite best efforts we could not find a replacement so keith mosley demonstrated. keith's topic was a textured, square platter after those produced by al stirt. the texturing was somewhere between the sublety of the robert sorby texturing tool and the absolute power of the arbortech power carving tools. keith used some rotary chisels available from the usa in an axminster flexible drive unit. see the rotary chisel's website for more details examples of al stirt's work can be seen on his webite here 11 may - priestwood community centre (pcc) agm the pcc decided to use the occasion of their agm to show off to people living around the community centre the type of events that were taking place in the centre. the bwa was given the use of one of the rooms for the duration of the evening (most of the other centre users had 20 minute slots in the main hall). dave blundell, viv mitchell and keith mosley demonstrated some turning, mainly spinning tops given away to the numerous children who came to see the demos. we also provided a display of turned items. there was quite a lot of interest, including one or two who showed an inclination to try woodturning. a worthwhile effort in supporting the community centre committee which they much appreciated. 20 may - bracknell town council's spring event at jock's lane as last year bwa demonstrated woodturning at this local community event. dave blundell, viv mitchell, chris cox, matt petch and keith mosley provided simple woodturning demos throughout the day. mainly turning spinning tops for the children attending. quite a lot of interest including a few who said they would like to try woodturning. we were also offered some large pieces of oak which had been stood in the garage at jock's lane for a number of years. hopefully we will be able to retrieve them sometime soon. we also made contact with some tree surgeons who were also attending. hopefully this might lead to a source of turning blanks. ⇧ bwa general enquires bwa secretary david blundell email: [email protected] telephone: 01344 427326 mobile: 07944 538323 bwa events bwa event secretary keith mosley email: [email protected] privacy no personal information is collected or retained when using the bwa website copyright © 2016 berkshire woodturners association bwa website bwa webmaster keith mosley email: [email protected] -- 500x500
